SEC Launches Cyber Unit to Tackle Crypto Fraud

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has established the Cyber and Emerging Technologies Unit (CETU) to combat cryptocurrency fraud and protect retail investors from cyber-related misconduct. Led by Laura Dā€™Allaird, CETU replaces the Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit and comprises 30 fraud specialists and attorneys across multiple SEC offices. This initiative aims to safeguard investors, facilitate capital formation, and enhance market efficiency amid growing cryptocurrency adoption in the U.S. The move aligns with the SEC's shift towards a more supportive stance on digital assets under the pro-crypto leadership of President Donald Trump.

European Central Bank to Launch Blockchain Payment System

The European Central Bank (ECB) is planning to develop a blockchain-based payment system aimed at allowing financial institutions to settle transactions in central bank money. This initiative follows the ECB's recent proposal for a digital euro and is part of a broader strategy to enhance European financial market efficiency through innovation. The move also aligns with the global shift towards digital assets, spurred by the United States' pro-crypto stance under President Donald Trump. ECB board member Piero Cipollone emphasized the importance of integrating blockchain technology into the European financial infrastructure as part of this strategic push.

Russian Authorities Unblock Crypto Exchange Aggregator BestChange

Russian authorities have unblocked the website of BestChange, a crypto exchange data aggregator, after it was banned on February 10 for allegedly violating advertising laws. The site, which compares exchange rates for cryptocurrencies and fiat, was unblocked on February 20 without prior notice. BestChange was previously blocked in 2017, 2019, and 2020 due to restrictions on Bitcoin usage. Despite regulatory challenges, the website continued to operate via a mirror site hosted outside Russia. The unblocking comes as Russia legalizes crypto mining and explores international cryptocurrency transactions to bypass Western sanctions.

  • The unblocking coincides with Russia's evolving crypto regulations, including legalizing mining and exploring international transactions to circumvent sanctions.
